Below- The little town of Comillas whose profile in the distance made me stop (& provided an amazing surprise (in the second row below): a capricho (whimsy) by Antonio Gaudí) as I passed on the way from Santander to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the well-known end of St James' walk, the second most important pilgrimage, after Jerusalem, to Medieval Europe. When one does the walk (begins officially 900 kilometres away in foothills of the French Alps but the church considers 100 kilometres legal pilgrimage) he stops at regular sanctioned intervals to have his 'pilgrim's passport' signed at various churches to prove to the Cathedral at Santiago he has indeed done it. As reward the Church will then grant him forgiveness for half of his sins... Isn't that dastardly?! However many times you do the pilgrimage you will still be worthy of only guilt, contrition & fear of your benevolent God's censure...
